When planning your dream session you search for poses on Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and even mom groups. I mean how many times have you searched up Newborn Photography just to look through the images! We’ve all been there. What better way to pick poses than to see what a newborn photographer picks!
There are 3 main area’s we shoot as newborn photographers. Table poses, Prop shots and Parent poses. All have a wide variety of options. Now keep in mind, every baby is different and they aren’t always comfortable in every pose. Therefore we always put priority on baby’s comfort instead of hitting every pose!
Newborn Photography Table Poses
As the name implies table poses are done on well, a newborn posing table! This table has several layers of blankets and posing devices to help keep baby cozy and safe. Table poses typically have 1-2 backdrops and are baby only or baby and parent hands.
Bum Up
Bum Up is one of babies favorite poses! All squished up and comfy reminds them of being in their mothers womb. I also like to add variety by including parents hands in this shot or shooting from above. I mean we all love baby rolls!
Side lay
This one is fairly self explanatory. Side lay pose is when baby is laying on their side as if they were sleeping.
Taco Pose
Taco pose is one of my favorites. In the taco pose baby is curled up so you can see every little bit of baby. Look at those toes peaking through! Parents hands can also be incorporated.
Heart Bowl Pose
Normally I would include these with the prop poses, but these are focused on baby! Heart bowl shots are some of my favorite they are so clean – but show how much love you have for sweet babies!
Froggy Pose
This pose is a parent favorite and can you blame them! Babies look so cute like this, however it is the hardest pose to achieve. This pose should NEVER be done by someone is isn’t trained in newborn safety and posing. In fact we are supporting baby the whole time! This is a composite of 2-3 images combined. The “fallen froggy” is also a variation of this.
Top down/tucked in/hammock pose
To round off our table poses we have top down and hammock poses. These are done on a posing cot as opposed to table so I can safely shoot from above. At all points during the session, but especially with these, my camera strap will always be around my neck to ensure the camera doesn’t fall.
Detail shots
Detail shots are almost always done on the posing cot or the table. This is where we can incorporate your wedding rings/jewelry and focus on all of babies little details like fingers, toes and tiny lips! Have I mentioned how much i LOVE black and white detail shots?!
Parent Poses
Parent poses are so special. My goal is to make everyone as comfortable as possible, while creating timeless photos. Depending on preference we do wrapped poses or “naked” poses. I love incorporating the gowns from maternity session with my momma’s! We always do full family photos, individual parents and sibling poses if there are other kids in the family. My specialty for parent and family photos are my black and white backlit images.
Wrapped Shots
Non-wrapped/skin-on-skin Shots
I think it is so amazing brining a child into the world, the intimacy and connection skin on skin contact creates. I love doing skin on skin with both moms and dads as well as a non-wrapped baby. Baby has a diaper *mostly* on still to decrease the likelihood of an accident.
Backlit images
These images are an all time favorite of mine. Any maternity or newborn client that walks through my studio doors gets at least one of these images in their gallery. The emotion and connection that is shown in the photos is nothing short of amazing. Don’t let me go on about it, see for yourself.
Prop Shots
And last, but not least, we have our prop shots. I have so many wonderful props in the studio, so we can customize your session to your every want. From beds, to heart bowls, flokati shots and buckets. The possibilities are endless. I am going to separate this category into physical props and flokatis.
Props
I love the mood that gets brought into the gallery through prop shots. Whether baby is snuggled in a bucket or wrapped in the heart bowl, you will get amazing photos and think how in the world was my baby that small.
Flokati
These shots bring that bit of texture into your gallery. Typically I use the flokati for the potato wrap as well as a sitting pose. Occasionally we throw in a little heart or object for baby to hold.
Now that you’ve seen most of the poses we do, you can make a more informed list when talking to your newborn photographer about poses. Keep in mind not every baby loves every pose, but I will be sure to try my best.
